Severna Park bests No. 4 Severn, extends win streak to 25; Coffman and Patschorke each drop 6 goals
Last year, Severna Park High opened its boys' lacrosse season with back-to-back losses to Archbishop Spalding and Severn School, paving the path to the Class 4A/3A state championship. The possibilities are endless this spring for the No. 7 Falcons, especially after their 15-13 victory over fourth-ranked Severn Thursday at the Andy Eser Memorial Tournament at Spalding.
Junior midfielder Josh Coffman and UMBC recruit Trevor Patschorke each finished with six goals for Severna Park (8-0 overall), and Stephen Zichelli added a goal and two assists. University of Pennsylvania-bound attack Michael Lamon and Dylan Gergar recorded hat tricks for Severn (9-2), ranked No. 9 nationally by USA Today.
After building a five-goal advantage, the Falcons had to rally in the fourth quarter, extending the area's longest winning streak to 25 games. The Anne Arundel County champs scored the game's final four goals, gaining their first victory over their private school rival (schools separated by less than a mile) since 2013.
Trailing 13-11, Coffman scored twice in the first 75 seconds of the fourth, including an extra-man tally, bringing Severna Park even. Zichelli, an UMBC recruit, put the Falcons back up with 8 minutes, 24 seconds left in regulation.
After rallying for a 10-9 victory against Spalding Tuesday at the Public/Private Challenge at Annapolis Severna Park were the aggressors early Thursday. The Falcons struck for three goals in the opening two minutes en route to a 6-1 first quarter advantage.
But Severn, which other loss is to nation's No. 2 Landon School, worked its way back to within 6-5 in the second quarter. Down 10-8 at halftime, the Admirals dominated the third quarter, gaining their first lead since the game's opening minute as Jake Lilly finished a Lamon pass with 3:20 left in the period.
The Falcons regrouped as Coffman, who's committed to the University of Maryland, converted on the EMO with 11:42 remaining in regulation. Coffman struck again seconds later before Zichelli and Patschorke capped the rally.
Severna Park visits No. 20 Howard Wednesday in a rematch of last year's 4A/3A state title match. Severn begins MIAA A Conference competition at second-ranked Boys' Latin School, in a rematch of last spring's league semifinal.
