Cardinal slip past Curley in the elimination bracket
Top-ranked Calvert Hall got a scare from sixth-seeded Archbishop Curley, in the MIAA A Conference baseball playoffs, Wednesday in Towson, but the Cardinals rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to capture a 3-2 win over No. 18 Archbishop Curley.

The Cardinals (25-3) will now host second-ranked Archbishop Spalding, Friday at the Hall, in yet another elimination game. The Cavaliers, in search of a fourth straight league title, were victimized, as was Calvert Hall on Monday, by upstart Loyola in Wednesday’s winners’ bracket final. The Dons scored a 3-2 win to advance to Sunday’s finals at Harford Community College where they need just win in this double-elimination event, to win the championship.

The Friars (16-14) broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, as Zeke Maldonado cracked an RBI triple and scored on an error by Cardinal right-fielder JP Murphy.

In the home half of the inning, Calvert Hall responded with all three of their runs. Brendan Webster plated the first run with a sac fly and Parker Landwehr followed with a pinch-hit two-run home run to put the Cardinals on top.

Calvert Hall pitcher Daniel O’Conner, who came on in the fifth and allowed both Curley runs, got the final six outs to finish off the contest for the Cardinals.
