Coppola selected to lead Spalding soccer

1/26/2010

John Coppola
Archbishop Spalding has announced the appointment of John Coppola, a 1995 graduate of the school, as its new varsity soccer head coach.

Coppola, who has coached the Spalding junior varsity for the last three years, played soccer for the Cavaliers when he attended Spalding and served as a varsity assistant with the program from 1996 through 1998.

Coppola also serves as the Chief Financial Office at Spalding. "I am excited about the opportunity to coach my alma mater in the MIAA A Conference," said Coppola. "I look forward to preparing the men's soccer program for the challenges the league presents day in and day out."

"We are pleased that he has accepted the position of Head Varsity Soccer Coach," said Spalding president Dr. Micahel Murpohy. "His experiences as a player and a coach for Spalding have prepared him to teach a new generation of players about life on and off the field."

Coppola succeeds Chris Johnson, who led Spalding for the past three years. In 2009, Spalding was 6-13-1 overall and just 2-11-1 in the A Conference. Late in the season, the Cavaliers did stun eventual league champion Mount St. Joseph when they played the Gaels to 1-1 tie. In addition, they knocked off Calvert Hall, a league semifinalist, in early October.
