Gilman overcomes Curley in overtime, 74-70
1/29/2010
Fighting for its playoff life, Archbishop Curley hosted Gilman, the MIAA B Conference's hottest team, Friday night, but despite a gallant effort the Friars came up on the short end of a 74-70 loss, as the Greyhounds prevailed in overtime.
The win, Gilman's 13th straight, reversed the 68-66 loss it suffered to the Friars back in December. It also allowed the Greyounds to maintain their narrow lead over Mount Carmel and St. Paul's in the Red Division of the B Conference. For Curley (8-13, 6-6), the loss dropped it further back of the leaders in the chase for the division's three playoff berths. The Friars now have just three regular season games left to make up ground.
Gilman's big three of CJ Jones, Ryan Ripken and Bryan Willis were brilliant again. Jones scored 25, followed by 23 from Ripken and 15 from Willis. Duncan Hutchins and Darius Jennings combined for the remaining 11 Gilman points.
Curley also got a strong three man effort, with sophomore Evan Singletary and freshman Baxter Miles combining for 43 points, to go with 15 points from senior Stephon McCray.
Gilman will be idle until next Friday when it visits Boys' Latin. The Greyhounds will then conclude their regular season on Feb. 9 at home against St. Paul's. Curley will host Severn on Tuesday and visit Friends next Friday. If the Friars hang in the race through that point, they will have a huge clash to end the regular season, on Feb. 9, at Mount Carmel.
