MSJ wrestling tops McDonogh, 36-27

The classic Mount St. Joseph/McDonogh dual meet history renewed Friday night on the wrestling mat of the host Eagles in Owings Mills, but it was visiting St. Joe, which won nine matches and walked away victorious, 36-27.
The Gaels improved to 5-0 in the MIAA A Conference with the victory, putting them well on their way to their second straight MIAA dual meet crown and their seventh overall.
The Gaels took the lead in the fourth match of the night an never trailed from there.
Four pins, from Mitch Bode (140), Kevin Marvel (189), Logan Meister (103) and Xavi Ramos (112), kept McDonogh in the match to the very end, but ultimately the Gaels had too much depth.
The match began at 135 where senior Gino Pollock claimed a 3-0 win for St. Joe over Josh Hengen. Following Bode's fall, Benny Schaufele evened the match with a 6-2 decision over Tyler Patrick, at 145, and Travis Rill (152) put the Gaels on top for good, with St. Joe's only pin of the night.
Following Rill, Dorian Spradlin (160) and Bobby Bowman (171) picked up consecutive decisions for the Gaels. Marvel slowed the run when he stopped Austin Bohn at 3:37 of their 189 match, but the Gaels moved in front 29-12 following a tech fall (16-1) by Tyler Tippett (215) and a forfeit at 285.
Meister and Ramos closed the gap to 29-24 with their pins for the Eagles, before Kevin Johnson pushed the Gael advantage to nine with a major decision (9-1) over Theo Duncan at 119. At 125, Anthony Pagnotta kept McDonogh alive with a 3-1 win over Mike Becker, but Matt Hitz (130) iced things for the Gaels with a 13-8 victory over Max Sataloff.
McDonogh fell to 4-2 in the conference where it is in deadlock with Archbishop Curley, Loyola and John Carroll.
