2/5/2010
Left for dead several times this season, defending MIAA B Conference champion St. Mary's has hung in the playoff race and, Thursday, with a huge, 51-50, upset of host St. Paul's, combined with a loss by Annapolis Area Christian at Mount Carmel, the Saints have moved a half game up on the Eagles and a full game up on Severn in the race for the final playoff spot in the Black Division.
The Saints have two games left, at St. Vincent Pallotti on Friday (weather permitting) and at home against AACS, on Tuesday.
St. Mary's (10-11, 5-7) raced in front, 19-10, at the end of one quarter and maintained its one-point advantage through the half. The lead extended to 10 after three quarters, before St. Paul's stormed back in the final quarter.
Junior Niles Tower led the Saints with 13 points, while Mark McNeill added 11, and Mike Wilde and Danny Usewick scored eight each.
Winfield Wills scored 18 to lead St. Paul's and Virgil Davis netted 16,
St. Paul's (12-7, 8-5) has now fallen out of a second place tie with Mount Carmel (16-8, 9-4) in the Red Division but still remains in solid position to make the playoffs.
Elsewhere in the B Conference, Glenelg Country defeated Pallotti, 69-58, to clinch the top seed in the Black Division.
