Spalding does it again

4/10/2010

The Archbishop Spalding lacrosse team opened the season with losses in three of its first four games, but the Cavaliers played extremely well in a two-goal setback to top-ranked Boys' Latin before embarking on its current six game win streak which includes an 11-10 overtime win over local rival St. Mary's, Friday at Spalding.

Brian Cooper, who has been on fire during the win streak, scored three goals in the victory, including the game-winner just 48 seconds into overtime.

Cooper's score set off a wild celebration as the Cavaliers and their fans savored a rare victory over the Saints.

The game was as close as the final score would indicate. There were 10 ties and the largest lead for either team was one goal.

McRoy also scored three times for Spalding, including a goal that forced overtime with slightly more than a minute remaining in fourth quarter.

Luke Dick also had a big offensive day for the Cavs, scoring two goals and adding three assists, while Wade Korvin, Billy Binder and Matt Franchak had one score each. The Spalding man-down defense was also excellent, shutting out the Saints on five extra-man opportunities.

In defeat, St. Mary's John Hogan was brilliant, as he scored six points, with three goals and three assists. Ryland De Pol also netted a hat-trick for the Saints, while Mark McNeill and Peter Boyle had two goals each.

Spalding is now 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the A Conference. It trail's 4-0 Boys' Latin by a half game in the Red Division. St. Mary's lost for the second straight time and is now 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the league.
