Andrew Hannan added a final footnote to his impressive Gilman tennis resume Friday afternoon at McDonogh. The senior won the MIAA A Conference No. 1 singles championship.
Hannan defeated Severn’s Daniel McNair in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, for his second straight No. 1 singles and third MIAA A individual championship. He also helped the Roland Park school to three MIAA A team crown in his four-year career.
“I feel accomplished,” Hannan said. “To go back-to back was my goal for the year.”
Longtime Greyhounds coach Steve Kruelvitz said Hannan’s poise sets him apart.
“He (doesn’t) get upset, he (doesn’t) get ruffled,” Kruelvitz said. “You think ‘what do I have to do to get to this guy,’ that can make you try and play better. Then you start missing.”
In No. 2 singles, McDonogh’s Landon Tammadon beat Alec Nabit from Gilman, 6-4, 6-3. Calvert Hall’s Luke GIbbs beat Lleyton Cathell 6-4, 6-4, for the No. 3 singles crown.
McDonogh reigned supreme in doubles. Spencer Park and Nathan Huang outlasted Loyola’s Colin Strain and Soren Bammens 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), for the No. 1 crown. Park and Huang won No. 2 doubles last spring.
In the No. 2 match, Max Antwerpen and Devesh Cherukuri outlasted Calvert Hall’s Christian Coulson and David Susko 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-5.
Mount St. Joe’s sophomore Andrew Kinnear claimed the B Conference No. 1 singles championship, defeating Park’s Josh Solomon 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
Kinnear hopes Friday’s effort is the start of something big.
“Win the next two years,” Kinnear said. “That would be good.”
In the No. 2 match, Park’s Noah Bender won over Beth Tfiloh’s Brendon Rybalnik, who withdrew in the third set due to cramps. Bender and Rybalnik split the first two sets.
Bender was leading, 5-1, in the third when Rybalnik retired.
Boys’ Latin’s Neil Curley swept Park’s Liam Testa 7-5, 7-5, for the No. 3 singles title. Mount St. Joseph’s also won in No. 1 doubles as Roger Fredrickson and Troy Basham rallied to beat Friends’ Mason Cost and Ramsey Kissack, 0-6. 6-4, 7-5. Boys’ Latin won the No. 2 match, with Logan Roth and Max Riter sweeping Ryan Joyce and Matthew Bunchness from Mount St. Joseph, 6-1, 6-2.
