Loyola and Spalding roll to big wins in A lax quarterfinals
B and C Conference playoffs also get undreway
The MIAA lacrosse post season got underway on Friday with the A Conference producing a pair of high-scoring affairs to set the stage for Tuesday’s semifinal double-header at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. Loyola Blakefield rolled past Severn, 18-11, and Archbishop Spalding took out St. Mary’s, 12-6.
At Blakefield, the host Dons erupted for a season-high 18 scores in dispatching Severn in their quarterfinal contest. Making the performance more impressive is that this occurred with Bennett Cook, the team’s leading scorer, sidelined by injury.
Cooper Lewis paced Loyola with four goals, while Matthew Kehrin had two goals and three assists, Cole Mosier netted a hat-trick and Evan Baeher delivered a pair of goals and an assist.
Playing on its home turf, Spalding scored the first four goals of the game and powered its way to a relatively easy victory over the Saints.
Brady Mollot paced the scoring with two goals and a whopping six assists for the Cavaliers. Adam Schwab netter a hat-trick for Spalding, while Colby Evans, Carson Blair and Brody Moss each scored a pair of goals.
Loyola moves on to face its arch-rival, top-seeded Calvert Hall, in the first game on Tuesday, at 5:00 p.m. Immediately following, Spalding will square off with second-seeded McDonogh. Tuesday’s winners will play for the championship on Friday night at Stevenson University’s Mustang Stadium.
In the B Conference quarterfinals, fifth-seeded Concordia Prep went on the road and knocked off fourth-seeded Indian Creek, 12-10. The win sends the Saints to a semifinal date, on Tuesday, at top-seeded Saints Peter & Paul. In the other quarterfinal, third-seeded Gerstell Academy humbled St. Vincent Pallotti, 18-1. Gerstell will now challenge second-seeded Archbishop Curley on Tuesday in East Baltimore.
The C Conference also produced an upset in the 4-5 game, as fifth-seeded Key School defeated Gunston School, 9-5. The Obezags advance to a semifinal game at top-seeded Park School on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, third-seeded Friends will face second-seeded Glenelg County in Ellicott City. The Quakers reached the semis with a 7-6 win over Jemicy.
The B Conference championship game will precede the A Conference final at Mustang Stadium on Friday, while the C Conference final will be played on Thursday evening at US Lacrosse Stadium in Sparks.
