Mount Carmel and Beth Tfiloh baseball survive elimination games
The Cougars and Warriors move on in the B and C conference playoffs
The B and C Conference baseball playoffs continued on Tuesday with elimination games in each conference’s double-elimination tournament.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel survived to play another day with its 7-3 win over St. Mary’s in B Conference. The Cougars earned a date, on Wednesday, at Severn, in another elimination contest. Wednesday winner will play the loser of the winners’ bracket final between St. Paul’s and Park, on Friday.
The Cougars broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the top of the fifth and that held up for the victory.
Dominic Reynolds gave Mount Carmel and a 4-3 lead with an RBI double and Camden Mathews followed with a sac fly to stretch the lead to two. Three batters later, Andy Molina-Sosa doubled home the final two runs for the Cougars.
Chase Counts earned the win on the mound with a complete game effort. He allowed just four hits and just one earned run, while striking out eight.
The B Conference finals are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium. The second game of the finals, if necessary, will again be a Joe Cannon, on Monday.
In the C Conference Beth Tfiloh surrendered three runs and a 7-5 lead over St. Frances, in the top of the seventh, but rallied for two runs of its own, in the bottom of the inning, to pull off a 9-8 walk-off victory.
Following a pair of walks, sandwiched around a fielder’s choice groundout in the home half of the seventh, the Warrios put a pair of base runners in scoring position on a passed ball. This set the stage for heroics from Rafi Samuel, who plated the tying and winning runs with a single to right.
It was Samuel’s fourth hit in four plate appearances as he drove in four runs. He also added a walk and a run scored.
Beth Tfiloh will not face Key School, on Wednesday afternoon, in another elimination game. The winner of that game will play the loser of Wednesday’s winner’s bracket final between Concordia Prep and St. Vincent Pallotti, on Friday. The first game of the finals is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, at Joe Cannon Stadium. The second game, if necessary will be on Monday, also at Joe Cannon.
