St. Joe and Calvert Hall deadlocked in A Conference; Severn and St. Paul's lead the B; Concordia Prep unscathed in the C

Swept in last year’s A Conference championship series and thumped, 10-0, in the opener of a three-game showdown, Calvert Hall faced another difficult assignment last Wednesday at Carlo Crispino Stadium in Towson against recent nemesis John Carroll.
Only this time, the Cardinals responded after trailing, 8-5, in the sixth inning to walk-off the Patriots, 9-8, in the seventh.
Second baseman Jake Lindsey’s clutch single plated fellow junior Cooper McDonald, whose head-first slide across home plate ended the contest and touched off a huge celebration by the home team.
Other heroes for Calvert Hall included senior pinch hitter Preston Atkinson (game-tying double in the sixth), junior shortstop/reliever Anthony Williams (scoreless seventh, RBI), senior Luke Kreiner (double, RBI), junior Dalton Depriest (3-for-3, 3 RBIs) and senior first baseman Noah Myers, who threw out the possible go-ahead run at the plate in the seventh.
The Patriots' hitters were also swinging the bat well. Leadoff hitter Joey Coudon (3-for-4, 3 RBIs) belted two homers and senior classmate Kiernan Deremeik also went deep.
The Cardinals then earned a second consecutive victory over JC, 8-6, in Bel Air on Friday, overcoming a 24-17 run differential in the series to remain tied with Mount St. Joseph for first place in the A Conference with two series remaining in the regular season.
After losing a couple of one-run games in March, MSJ won its second close encounter by edging Gilman, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Starter Drake Meiller handcuffed the Greyhounds through 4.2 innings.
Yaniel Escalera (2-for-4, SB, R, RBI) led the hitters for the Gaels, who exploded at the plate in a 19-1 victory over Gilman in the middle game before junior Chase Robey’s bases-loaded walk was the difference in a 1-0 win and a series sweep in the final meeting.
Archbishop Spalding (16-5, 11-4) recorded 9-0, 11-5 and 11-0 wins over Archbishop Curley (5-17, 1-14) to keep close on the heels of Calvert Hall and St. Joe.
Severn junior Colby Benz allowed five hits, struck out seven and didn’t give up an earned run in a 2-1 triumph over Boys’ Latin (6-4, 6-4) in a key B Conference battle while senior Brendan Szydlik (1-for-3, R, RBI) contributed with his bat for the Admirals (7-0, 7-0).
Despite dropping a 7-1 decision to Gerstell Academy (5-5-1, 5-4) two days later, Severn still stayed a half game ahead of Park in the Red Division race. The Bruins (8-2, 7-2) handed St. Paul’s its first setback in conference play, 6-4.
Even so, St. Paul’s (12-4, 8-1) maintains a two-game lead over Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Black Division after beating Glenelg Country on Friday, 10-6. The Cougars (11-6, 6-3) defeated Park, 9-5, and Gerstell Academy, 13-5, while bowing to St. Mary’s, 7-6.
Beth Tfiloh (6-2, 4-1 Red) and Concordia Prep (7-0, 7-0 Black) stayed atop their respective C Conference divisions. The Panthers edged St. Vincent Pallotti, 10-9, and the Saints beat Friends, 13-0, and Key, 16-12.
