Calvert Hall reaches MIAA A Conference baseball championship series
Cardinals complete a two-game sweep of three-time defending champion Archbishop Spalding
While most MIAA baseball playoff action was postponed on Tuesday, Calvert Hall and Archbishop Spalding were in action in the second game of their MIAA A Conference semifinal series, at Joe Cannon Stadium, and the visiting Cardinals came from behind to win, 3-1, completing a two-game sweep of the three time defending champion Cavaliers.
Calvert Hall followed Monday's 7-1 home win over the Cavaliers with another outstanding pitching performance. After allowing a single unearned run in the bottom of the first, Peter Bashore settled in and shutout Spalding the rest of the way, as his offense rallied for the win. Bashore struck out eight and walked only one.
Calvert Hall tied the game on a Clark Mileto sac fly in the second inning. An error contributed to the Cardinal's go-ahead run in the third inning and Kaden Barmer drove home the third run with a sac fly in the fifth inning.
The Cardinals now await the winner of the other semifinal series which is scheduled to resume on Thursday. John Carroll leads Mount St. Joseph, 1-0, and the two teams are set to meet in Irvington tomorrow afternoon. However, if the Gaels' field remains unplayable, the contest will be moved to Loyola Blakefield.
The MIAA A Conference best-of-three championship series is scheduled to begin on Saturday at the home field of the higher seed, before moving to Joe Cannon on Sunday. The third game, if necessary, will be played on Monday.
In the B Conference, McDonogh defeated St. Paul's, 7-1, in the winners' bracket final of the double-elimination tournament, played at John Carroll. The Eagles advance the tournament finals at Joe Cannon on Sunday. McDonogh needs just one win to take the title. In the B Conference elimination bracket, Boys' Latin routed Gerstell Academy and will face Severn on Thursday.
The C Conference winners' bracket final between Park and Beth Tfiloh was postponed until Thursday. In the elimination bracket, Key defeated St. Vincent Pallotti, 7-5. The Obezags advance to face St. Frances on Thursday.
