Calvert Hall's Austin Chhun wins MIAA A No. 1 singles tennis title
Friends Mason Cost captures B Conference gold in No. 1 singles

Like many of his counterparts, Austin Chhun battled fatigue Thursday at the MIAA individual and doubles championships at McDonogh. The Calvert Hall freshman weathered the conditions and the field, claiming the A Conference No. 1 singles crown.
Chhun defeated McDonogh’s Josh Maller in three sets, overcoming a disastrous 6-0 second set loss and 5-4 deficit (won 7-5) in the third set. He claimed the opening set, 6-4.
“I was really struggling,” said Chhun, who defeated Loyola’ Tommy Seward in straight sets in the semifinals earlier Thursday. “I noticed he (Maller) was tiring and took advantage.”
Because of rainouts Tuesday and Wednesday, semifinals and championship matches took place Thursday afternoon, and ended in the early evening.
Chhun’s teammate Francis Cellabos, also a freshman, claimed the No. 2 singles title as McDonogh’s Landon Tamaddon retired in the first game of the opening set after suffering a wrist injury.
McDonogh’s Gil Boker won No. 3 singles with a straight set (6-0. 6-3) decision over Gilman freshman Kiran Milan. The Eagles won their first A team title in over a decade last week, swept doubles.
McDonogh’s No. 1 duo of Sky Amster and David Barnstein swept St. Paul’s Leo Sara and Trevor Miller. Spencer Park and Rajan Marwaha topped Calvert Hall’s Timothy Gonzol and David Susko.
After losing in No. 1 doubles last year, Friends senior Mason Cost captured the B Conference No. 1 singles championship, outlasting Key’s Luke Holmes in three sets. The Obezags got the No. 2 singles title as junior Morgan Schaefer defeated Jonah Mogul from Park in straight sets.
Boys’ Latin’s Evan Rosen swept Moe Longeran from Archbishop Spalding for the No. 3 championship. The Laker duo junior Logan Roth and senior Max Riter won their second consecutive doubles title, defeating Friends’ Mikey Lyons and Will Aaronson in straight sets for the No. 1 crown.
Riter and Roth won No. 2 doubles last year. Boys’ Latin, which claimed a fourth straight B Conference team crown last week, got a third title Thursday with sophomore Graham Feiss and senior Charlie London winning No. 2 doubles over Park’s Nelson Knoche and Nathan Moorthy.
