McDonogh breaks out against Loyola; Calvert Hall tops A Conference standings
by Nelson Coffin
McDonogh junior Thomas Goodman (6 goals, assist) and fellow attackman, senior Hunter Metz (4 and 2), provided a prolific one-two punch to help overwhelm Loyola Blakefield, 14-5, last week, knocking the Dons out of a tie with archrival Calvert Hall (7-2, 5-0 league) for first place in the A Conference.
Although Loyola (6-5, 5-1) overcame large late deficits to rally past Severn and Boys’ Latin during a four-game winning streak to open league play, the Eagles (8-3, 4-2) would not let their guard down. With senior FOGO Ciaran (14 of 17) dominating face-offs, the Dons were unable to get much momentum going in the second half.
Aidan Fournier, Jansen Craig, Carter Pett and Roman Knych also rippled the net for McDonogh, which beat Mount St. Joseph in Irvington on Friday afternoon.
Loyola (6-5, 5-1) rebounded nicely, however, with a 13-9 verdict over Gilman (7-6, 1-5), building a 7-3 halftime advantage on three goals by senior midfielder Cole Mosier and two by sophomore Cooper Lewis. The Dons held a comfortable 13-6 lead until the Greyhounds responded with three straight scores to end the battle.
Calvert Hall’s lone game of the week was an 11-7 triumph over St. Paul’s that featured significant contributions from junior attackman Hut Perdew (3 and 1) and sophomore running mates Caleb Kelly (3 and 1) and Adam Heuston (2 and 1). Junior midfielder Michael Steer (2 and 2), sophomore middie Banks Enrique (1 and 1) and senior shortstick Micha Morozov (assist) also helped the defending champs’ cause while junior goalie Nick Neavin recorded 9 saves.
Archbishop Spalding (5-4, 4-1) ran its winning streak to three games by garnering a 14-10 win over Severn (8-3, 3-2) a couple of days after the Admirals edged St. Joe, 14-13.
St. Mary’s (7-4, 3-2) built a 6-1 halftime lead and then held off a second-half comeback to top Boys’ Latin, 10-7. It was the third straight setback for the Lakers (5-6, 2-3), who started conference play with a pair of victories. The Saints, on the other hand, captured back-to-back wins by downing John Carroll, 13-4, Friday in Bel Air.
It was a wild week for Saints Peter & Paul (5-6, 2-0), which handled Indian Creek, 17-0, and Archbishop Curley by a narrow 14-13 margin to join Gerstell Academy as the only two unbeaten B Conference squads. The Falcons (2-6, 2-0) leveled Annapolis Area Christian School, 16-2, and St. John’s Catholic Prep, 15-1. Curley (9-1, 2-1) dropped St. Vincent Pallotti, 15-4, before bowing to the Sabres.
Park and Gunston are ruling the roost in the C Conference. The Bruins (5-1, 4-0) tripped up Glenelg Country, 13-6, and Jemicy, 16-1, while the Herons (4-3, 4-0) smothered Chapelgate Christian Academy, 4-0, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 10-6, to remain deadlocked atop the standings.
