MIAA Baseball Weekly Roundup (4/15/2024)
Spalding sweeps Curley; Loyola takes three straight from Calvert Hall; Gilman wins three conference games; BL and McDonogh stay undefeated in the B
MIAA baseball conference play reached full stride last week, despite some continuing uneven spring weather.
In the A Conference, Archbishop Spalding (11-2, 6-0) remained undefeated in league play with a three-game sweep of Archbishop Curley. The Cavaliers defeated the Friars, 3-0 (Monday) and 7-3 (Thursday) on the road, and took the middle game, 5-4, on their home diamond.
In the opener, Jake Yeager tossed a complete game two-hit shutout, while Brennan Inscoe doubled and drove in two runs. Sam Houchens also had an RBI for the Cavaliers.
In the second game, Curley held a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, but Spalding got two in the fifth and three in the sixth to capture the one-run victory.
Inscoe had another double in the win, while Cruz Luna had a two-run home run. Carver Salazar also had a pair of hits, including a double. Derek Poole, Austin Sealing and Owen Shaprow all hit solo home runs for Curley in the top of the fourth inning.
In the series finale, Spalding again wiped out a 3-0 Curley lead with a four-run fourth and three more in the fifth. Braeden Martin doubled in a run and Luna scored twice.
Curley (9-9 overall) slipped to 2-6 in league play.
Loyola (9-3, 7-3) vaulted into second place in the conference with a three game sweep of Calvert Hall, including two wins on the road.
Last Monday, Joe Notthingham made the start for the Dons and pitched five strong innings, allowing just four hits and one run, while striking 10 Cardinals in a 3-1 win. Gavin Pope tossed to final two innings to earn the save, striking out four and not allowing a hit.
Brad Seiss tripled home Loyola’s first run in the second inning and Colby Shilling drove home the winning runs, in the fifth with a two-run home run.
Schilling was the hero again on Wednesday. After Loyola scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, Schilling walked it off in the seventh with a RBI sac fly, for an 8-7 victory. He also had a hit and scored a run in the game.
Pope contributed three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs. Ryan Clary and Will Kelly also doubled, while Michael Delgaudio homered. Michael Copenspire paced Calvert Hall’s lineup with two hits and four RBI, while Thomas Pilarski drove in two.
In the finale on Friday, the Dons broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth, as Clary singled home one run and Pope scored on a wild pitch. They added an insurance run with a bases load walk in the sixth to win 5-2.
Calvert Hall fell to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in the league.
John Carroll (9-2 overall), which sits at 4-2 in third place in the A Conference, won a pair of non-league games last against Poly and Georgetown Prep.
Gilman (7-8 overall) also made a big move in the league last week, winning three league games, defeating Mount St. Joseph, 9-7, 6-5 and 8-5, to move into fourth place with a 4-5 league mark.
Jake Mohler had a double, two walks and scored three runs in the opener and Toby Roseband and Danny Leikus each had a pair of hits and an RBI. Jute Taylor also doubled and scored a run. Leikus and Mohler each went 4-for-4 in the middle game and Wyatt Randolph homered. Leikus added three more hits and three RBI in the final game and Taylor had two more hits and two RBI.
For good measure, the Greyhounds pounded out 15 hits and 17 runs in a 17-0 non-conference win over St. Paul’s on Saturday. Dylan Buchalter had a pinch hit three-run home run in that game.
In the B Conference, McDonogh (7-1 overall) moved to 7-0 in league play with wins over Indian Creek (17-7) and Gerstell (3-1). The Eagles own a half game lead over St. May’s (8-3, 6-1) in the Red Division. The Saints picked up a 6-5 non-conference win over Crofton and then defeated league rivals Annapolis Area Christian, 1-0, and Indian Creek, 8-6.
In the Black Division of the B Conference, Boys’ Latin (8-2 overall) improved to 6-0 atop the division with a 6-2 win over Severn and a 7-1 win over St. Paul’s.
St. Vincent Pallotti (5-4-1 overall) is off to a 4-0 start in the C Conference where it leads the Black Division. The Panthers defeated Friends, 13-5, and Concordia Prep, 11-1, last week. Park School (5-1, 4-1) is a half game behind Pallotti in the Division. The Bruins collected a 14-0 shutout of Jemicy and and 14-4 win over St. Frances.
Key is 2-2 in the Black Division in third, followed by Chapelgate Christian (1-3) and Saints Peter and Paul (0-6).
Beth Tfiloh (6-2, 5-2) leads the Red Division after going 1-2 last week in C Conference play. The Warriors defeated Jemicy, 6-2, and Chapelgate Christian, 13-9, but fell to Key School, 6-4.
The Red Division is tightly bunched with Concordia and Friends tied for second, each at 3-3, while Jemicy and St. Frances are both 2-2.
