MIAA Baseball Weekly Roundup 4/22/2024
Post-season seeds are at stakes as the season enters the final week of April
Archbishop Spalding (15-3, 10-0) remained undefeated in MIAA A Conference baseball with a three-game series sweep of Gilman, allowing just one run in the series and claiming victories of 7-0, 11-0 and 7-1.
The only blemish on the week for the Cavalier was a non-league loss to Bishop Eustice.
Loyola (11-5, 8-5) held on to second place in the A Conference despite dropping two-of-three to last place Mount St. Joseph (7-10, 3-10). The Gaels took the series opener, 6-3, and routed the Dons, 18-3, in the finale. Loyola captured the middle contest, 3-2.
Calvert Hall (11-7, 6-4 held onto third-place by winning two of three in its series with John Carroll. JC (10-5, 5-5), which remains in fourth place, won the first game, 9-5, but the Cardinals rebounded to win the final two, 2-0 and 5-2.
Gilman (4-8, 9-11) slipped to fifth-pace, but did pick up a non-conference win over Old Mill, 8-6
Archbishop Curley (3-7 in the conference) improved to 7-6 overall with a pair of non-league victories over Catonsville, 6-0, and St. Paul’s, 6-0.
In the B Conference, McDonogh (9-3 overall) began the week with a non-conference loss, 13-4, to St. Maria Goretti, but rebounded to defeat St. John’s Catholic Prep and Annapolis Area Christian to remain undefeated in (9-0) in league play. The Eagles remain in first atop the Red Division.
St. Mary’s (10-4, 7-2), which is in second place in the Red Division, opened its week with a 7-2 setback at Boys’ Latin, but rebounded with an 11-10 league win over Gerstell Academy before defeating City, 9-3, in a non-conference game.
Severn (8-5, 7-3) moved within a half game of St. Mary’s in the division with three league wins. The Admirals downed AACS (6-5), Indian Creek (13-1) and St. John’s Catholic Prep (12-3).
Fourth-place St. Paul’s (8-10, 5-4) climbed over the .500 mark in the B Conference with wins over Gerstell (8-4) and Indian Creek (13-1) and fifth-place Glenelg Country (3-6, 3-6) pulled the biggest surprise of the week with a 1-0 win over Boys’ Latin, the leader of the Black Division, handing the Lakers their first league loss of the season. The Dragons, however, suffered a 4-3 loss to St. John’s Catholic Prep to start the week.
Mount Carmel (3-10, 1-8) defeated Indian Creek, 10-0 for its first league win of the season, before suffering and 11-1 loss to AACS and a 13-0 setback against BL. The Cougars ended the week with a 10-0 non-league win over Friends School.
With the results already mentioned BL’s record stands at 10-3 overall and 8-1 in the league. The Lakers are still well head of second place AACS (6-9, 4-6).
SJCP (4-6, 3-5) is in third place in the division, followed by Gerstell (3-6, 3-6) and Indian Creek (0-10, 0-9).
Beth Tfiloh (7-3, 6-3), the leader of the Red Division of the MIAA C Conference, split two games last week, falling to Park, 4-3, and routing Saints Peter & Paul, 15-2.
Park (7-2, 6-1) shares first place in the Black Division with St. Vincent Pallotti (6-5-1, 5-0). In addition to the Bruins win over Beth Tfiloh, it defeated Chapelgate Christian, 6-3. Pallotti downed St. Frances, 8-3, last Thursday, and then dropped a non-league battle with Riverdale Baptist, 8-0.
Below Beth Tfiloh, the rest of the Red Division is tightly bunched with Concordia Prep (4-4) in second, followed by Friends (3-4), St. Frances (3-5) and Jemicy (2-4).
In the Black Division, Key (4-3) has a one-game lead over Chapelgate in the chase for third place, while Saints Peter & Paul is 0-8.
