MIAA Lacrosse Update 3/30/2026
Boys’ Latin, Calvert Hall, Loyola, Severn and St. Mary’s prevail in A Conference lax openers
by Nelson Coffin
Drawing a tough assignment to open its A Conference season, Boys’ Latin trailed, 4-0, in the early going before standing tall in the final minutes to edge McDonogh, 13-12, on Friday afternoon.
Junior William Kelly was the hero for the Lakers (4-3, 1-0 league), scoring the go-ahead goal late in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
BL led, 8-5, at lifetime, and then had the wherewithal to withstand a furious comeback by the Eagles (4-2, 0-1), who inched back on top early in the fourth quarter on sophomore Aiden Fournier’s goal.
The lead see-sawed back and forth until Kelly’s heroics decided the matter.
Not far down Roland Avenue, another big rally was brewing when Gilman (6-2, 0-1) produced a 4-0 run with short-handed goals by Cabot White and senior FOGO Joseph Kim to pull within 7-6 of defending champ Calvert Hall (3-2, 1-0) in the third quarter.
The Cardinals, though, did not wilt under pressure, mainly because senior midfielder Jack Williams scored three of the game’s final four goals to bolster a 10-6 victory. The Yale commit finished with a game-high four goals.
A key save by junior goalie Nick Neavin and a resounding takeaway by senior shortstick Misha Mirozov highlighted a defensive effort that blanked the Greyhounds after senior Chase Carpenter solved Neavin with just under two minutes remaining the third period.
Other A Conference winners include Severn, which doubled-up St. Paul’s, 8-4, after goals by Connor Cook and Ryan Vizcarrando gave the Crusaders a 4-2 advantage. Sophomore Charlie Schniedwind's left-handed drive was the go-ahead goal in the Admirals’ six-goal run to close the contest.
Archbishop Spalding opened its season with an offensive explosion, racking up an 18-13 verdict over John Carroll on Saturday while sending the Patriots to their second conference setback of the season.
John Carroll was also on the short end of a 14-7 decision to Loyola Blakefield.
Although St. Mary’s clamped down on Mount St. Joseph, 12-7, to get off to a fast start in conference play, the Saints’ ‘D’ will have to remain vigilant when Loyola travels to Annapolis on Tuesday. Undoubtedly, the Gaels will also be challenged when they visit BL on Tuesday.
After sweeping Baltimore County public school powers, Towson, Dulaney and Hereford, Archbishop Curley takes a 5-0 mark into its B Conference opener against Indian Creek on Tuesday.
The Eagles also had a successful preseason, winning five of seven before meeting the Friars.
Beth Tfiloh topped Chapelgate Christian Academy, 11-5, to get the C Conference season off and running.
