Lou Eckerl to be inducted into NHSBC Hall of Fame
Legendary Calvert Hall baseball coach and AD to be enshrined in December
Few figures in Maryland high school sports have left a legacy as deep and lasting as Lou Eckerl, and that impact is now being recognized on the national stage.
The former longtime Calvert Hall College High School athletic director and baseball coach will be inducted into the National High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December, honoring a career that helped define excellence in high school baseball for more than three decades.
During his tenure at Calvert Hall, Eckerl built one of the most successful programs in Maryland history. He guided the Cardinals to eight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) championships, highlighted by an extraordinary run of five consecutive titles from 2005 through 2009. His teams were known not only for winning, but for consistency, discipline, and player development — hallmarks of Eckerl’s coaching philosophy.
Eckerl retired with a career record of 524 wins and 166 losses, a resume that includes one of the most remarkable seasons ever recorded in the state. In 2007, Calvert Hall went a perfect 33-0, setting a Maryland state record for wins in an undefeated season.
His success earned widespread recognition throughout the baseball community. Eckerl was named Coach of the Year by The Baltimore Sun three times (2005, 2007, 2019), the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches Private School Coach of the Year in multiple seasons, the Old Timers Baseball Association of Maryland Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008, ABCA Region 2 Coach of the Year in 2008, and National High School Baseball Coaches Association Region 2 Coach of the Year in 2005.
This will not be Eckerl's first Hall of Fame honor. He was previously honored with spots in the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Old Timers Baseball Association of Maryland Hall of Fame in 2017.
Beyond the diamond, Eckerl’s influence extended throughout Calvert Hall athletics. He served as the school’s athletic director for 40 years, helping shape one of the premier athletic programs in the region before retiring in 2022. His leadership touched countless student-athletes, coaches, and families, leaving behind a culture built on excellence, integrity and opportunity.
Now, with his induction into the National High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, Eckerl’s impact has been cemented alongside the greatest coaches in the sport — a fitting honor for a career that transformed Calvert Hall baseball and elevated high school athletics across Maryland.
